Times...They Are'A Changin'

Once upon a time there was a husband and wife who often joked with her parents on the subject of the parents moving into the "in-law apartment" above the garage. Weird fairytale, right?

Well, that husband and wife didn't have an "in-law apartment" above their garage.....but we will in less than 3 months! Yup, this is my house and we are officially under construction. We are adding a third stall onto the garage and building the addition above all three stalls. I think it will be about 1000 sq ft of living space when its done.

The joke turned into a reality about 6 months ago. Although Keith and I are struggling, we are not suffering and are thankfully able to live on what we make each month. My parents were stable as well, but were looking to downsize since retirement is in the near future and they plan on traveling in the winter months. Fortunately, we are very close to my parents. When we discussed it, we agreed that times are tough for everyone, and we all felt it was a beneficial decision for our futures...financially and for family.

My parents miraculously sold thier house in this market and are now in an apartment for 3 months during the constuction. They should be moved in by the end of June. Yup, times, they are'a changin'....but we are all looking forward to it. It just gets loud around here sometimes! :o)

  2. Live in babysitters! Sounds like a great arrangement to me. :) Works for everyone involved, and since they will be away during the winter hibernation period you will all have a break. Glad to hear they sold their house...that's excellent luck in this market. :)

  3. I think it is an excellent idea as long as everyone gets along. Sometimes moves like this just make too much sense to ignore. Can't wait to see the progress.

  4. I think it's a great idea. They are close enough yet they have their own space. I certainly hope that my children would be willing to do that for me one day! I ditto Stacy on the live in babysitters, too.

  5. Wow, you weren't kidding when you said you had a big story to share!! That IS big, and exciting! I hope it all works out beautifully. I love my parents, but I'm not sure I'd want to live with them. ;o) Live in babysitters is a really good thing for sure.

  8. That is awesome - How fun to have a whole new wing to the house & to have your parents living with you will be very nice - I know I'd never mind mine being around all the time-which is good because not everyone can say that about their parents! Glad you guys were able to work out such a great situation!
